The Fall of the house of Usher and A rose for Emily are the
stories that I’m going to be comparing. They have very different point of views
and stories but they have some similarities on the themes they use. If you read
them, in a point of the story you are going to notice the things they have in
common. We can observe that they are from
different century. However Edgar
Allan Poe (author of the fall of the house of Usher ) and William Faulkner (
author of A rose for Emily) in different styles of writing they use the same
themes to cause a “horror” feeling.
The themes i'm going to be comparing are death, mental
sickness and the gothic style. By reading the two stories we can see that some
details the author give for example the description of the house are using Gothic style. This give the stories a kind of mysterious feeling to the story.
The other theme we can compare is death. In the two stories death is the
crucial topic. In the fall of the house of usher the story ended with two of
the characters dying making the story confusing and mysterious. In A rose for Emily when the protagonist die they found the dead body of one of the character
in her bed. The mental illness is not to hard to find by saying that in one of
them the protagonist “buried” his sister alive and in the other the protagonist
kill the men she “loved” and left him in her room.
In my opinion the two stories are very good but if I have to
choose a favorite it has to be A rose for Emily. The reasons of why i like this
story more is because the language its more easy to comprehend and it gave me
more motivation to read. The ending was way better because I really did not see
that coming. That doesn't mean the fall of the house of Usher is not a good
story it's just too boring for my taste.
